Wieschenberg, Agnes A. – 1999
This paper proposed the question "How do we teach logical thinking and sophisticated mathematics to unsophisticated college students?" One answer among many is through the writing of computer programs. The writing of computer algorithms is mathematical problem solving and logic in disguise and it may attract students who would otherwise stop…

Berenson, Lewis – Arithmetic Teacher, 1974
Using various aspects of mathematical structure as unifying concepts is stressed. Specific examples are given based on the concept of equivalent fractions and on the addition property of equality. (LS)

Durnin, John; Scandura, Joseph M. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1973
The purpose of this study was to compare three technologies: the item forms technology (domain-referenced testing) of Hively et al. (1968), the hierarchical or stratified item forms technology of Ferguson (1969), and the algorithmic technology of Scandura (1971, 1973). (Author/RK)

Mey, Jacob – Acta Linguistica Hafniensia, 1973
Examination of two works by Per Aage Brandt, "Pour une chromatique. Note sur des prepositions francaises" in "Lingua e Stile," 1971, and "L'analyse phrastique: reflexions pour une grammatique;" both of which discuss the need to develop a grammar superior to transformational grammar or Chomsky's surface structure-deep structure option. Kratzer, Richard O.; Willoughby, Stephen S. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1973
Twelve fourth-grade classes in two schools were taught division using either the subtractive approach to the Greenwood algorithm or a partitioning approach to the standard algorithm. Analysis of class means on immediate, retention, and delayed retention tests indicated that use of the standard algorithm was more effective. (JP)

Quast, W. G. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1972
A distinction is made between an algorithm and the justification for the algorithm. Examples of both are given for the operations with whole numbers. (DT)

Cole, Tony – Build International, 1972
The article is concerned with developing the Whitehead and Eldars algorithm for problems on more than one floor and an algorithm for the definition of circulation routes in computer-developed building plan arrangements. (Author)

Simon, Dorothea P.; Simon, Herbert A. – Review of Educational Research, 1973
The purpose of this paper is to distinguish several different ways in which phonemic information might be employed in spelling, to examine some empirical data on the consequences of using these different information sources, to formulate hypotheses about the underlying processes involved, and to suggest possible implications for the learning and…
