The Work of a Family Liaison with South Asian English Learner Families
Andrae Martin
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Shippensburg University
Engaging and supporting families in the learning environment is a critical ingredient to creating a positive educational experience and ensuring the academic success of all students. This study was guided by two research questions: In what ways does one family liaison work to foster the engagement of South Asian EL families in their children's learning? How do the families of South Asian ELs experience their interactions with one family liaison? Participants in this study included one multi-lingual family liaison and three English learner family members in an urban fringe school district. Data sources included observations, interviews, and document review. The findings of this qualitative study suggest that with the direct support of a family liaison, English learner (EL) families feel a greater sense of belonging and connectiveness to their learning environment which lead to increase engagement. Additionally, with the support of a family liaison EL families can overcome hurdles that prevent engaging in common school functions including family events, conferences, and general conversations with school personnel. Lastly, the findings in this study support previous research and suggest that a culturally responsive family liaison plays a critical role in creating a positive school culture that is inclusive of all students and families, in this case, EL families from South Asian origins.
